Staff Software Engineer - Yalla Platform

About the role

Yalla is bp's Internal Developer Platform built on Kubernetes, aimed at improving developer productivity and standardisation. As a Staff Engineer on the Yalla team, you sit at the intersection of software engineering and infrastructure, helping shape how developers across bp build, deploy and operate software at scale.

Key responsibilities

• Lead technical direction for the Yalla platform, setting standards for architecture, design and operations.
• Partner with the head of engineering to guide the team's priorities in line with bp's strategy.
• Mentor and coach engineers on coding practices, design reviews and operational standards.
• Design and build platform capabilities that make developers more productive, secure and efficient.
• Write high-quality, production-ready code in .NET, Python, Java or Go, and pick up new languages.
• Develop REST APIs and their unit tests, applying low-level design principles and patterns.
• Troubleshoot and debug infrastructure, networking and Kubernetes issues using Linux.
• Automate toil and build self-service workflows for developers, applying SRE and platform engineering practices.
• Design with observability in mind so systems are reliable and transparent.

Required profile

• Strong coding ability, including data structures and algorithms, API development and low-level design.
• Knowledge of design patterns and a robust testing strategy.
• Proven ability to set technical vision, lead engineers through design trade-offs and represent the team to senior stakeholders.
• Hybrid office/remote working; up to 10% travel expected; no relocation assistance.

Required skills

• Strong Kubernetes knowledge (scheduling, networking, controllers, orchestration) and Linux debugging.
• Deep understanding of metrics, logs and traces (observability).
• Nice to have: on-call experience, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Crossplane, Pulumi), Kubernetes operators or custom tooling, and exposure to AWS, Azure or GCP.
